What is a “Residential Care” dental hygienist?
A “Residential Care” Dental Hygienist is registered with the College of Dental Hygienists with additional qualifications based on an education program designed to teach experienced dental hygienists how to deliver care effectively in long-term care (LTC) settings focusing on special needs of the geriatric population, specialized hands-on training and experience (minimum 3500 hours of clinical experience) to enable dental hygienists to practice in care facilities.

- Oral assessment
- Professional Debridement (dental cleaning i.e. scaling and rootplaning)
- Fluoride Varnish application for prevention of decay
- Desensitization
- Professional denture cleaning
- Referrals to dentists and denturists as needed
- Support to families and staff who care for the individual and provide oral health instruction as needed
- Professional Mouthcare In-services for all Care staff in residential facilities.
